LA River restoration

Officials are moving ahead with a major revitalization of the Los Angeles River – removing miles of concrete along its banks and re-greening areas now covered with pavement. But the project raises an intriguing question: Just how much of an urban river can be returned to nature?

Wow, cool. We have destroyed 99 percent of California’s freshwater marshes and while I promote small-scale restoration in people’s own backyards with my Pool2Pond system, a Billion Dollar Plus project in the LA River is also a cool thing. Look at the slider in the “proposed” versus “now” images and move it back and forth. A very cool way to present the proposed system. Best to everyone. The restoration of wetland habitats is crucial.

It really is time

To start thinking green is clean and blue is ewwwwww. The only blue pools I know of have so much toxin in them it’s mind-boggling. The pool pictured here has had no poisons added to it. And that dragonfly larvae is literally 6 or 7 feet down. Yet you can see it clearly. Bob www.PuraVidaAquatic.com

Rechargeable batteries

I think that part of permaculture is doing a good job of recycling and that is also one of the reasons why I’m a huge fan of SpaceX. I have gotten disgusted with rechargeable batteries though. They are toxic so you shouldn’t throw them in the trash. And they don’t seem to last very long for me.

I had a jar of them and was thinking that I should try and take them somewhere, but had just not gotten around to it. I was cleaning up around that jar and decided to take a few of them and sand the ends with very fine sandpaper and try to recharge them again. They all recharged.

I have taken the rest of the jar, probably two dozen batteries, and have a 90% recharge rate after having sanded the ends thoroughly until they were bright and shiny. I think that rechargeable batteries are actually designed to fail. They all have a little dimple in the end where the chargers contact. It is very difficult to buff there. In some cases I took a file and rounded the end so that it was more dome-shaped and I can get the whole contact point all shiny.

I have a whole bag in the freezer now. They last a lot longer charged up if thay are in the freezer.

Another Hit to the Fourth Amendment

The Supreme Court just made it still easier for the police to stop and search people without any suspicion of wrongdoing.

Sonia Sotomayor makes a variety of very good arguments. Of course she’s a Supreme Court Justice.

The second best non-chemical Zika prevention of all time! :-)

She has hundreds if not thousands of them and the owners also cool off in the pool on hot days.

Bob

PS the best mosquito preventer is a damselfly in my opinion. Damselfly larvae eat mosquito larvae and damselfly adults eat mosquitoes.

And those obnoxious gambusia eat tadpoles and damselfly larvae, please do not use them.

How we can treat each other sustainably

Well there is too much religion at the end for me, but the beginning and middle is something well worth watching. It revolves around relationship sustainability. And the person I was watching this with knows about my XY chromosome ideas :-) And for some strange reason is still willing to be seen in my company.

But I think this is a perfect description of our brain chemistry and how deep that chemistry goes. Pink and blue video cameras! I would bet that a male gorilla feels the same way in a conflict that it doesn’t want to actually physically fight about. A conflict with a friend or with someone who is important to him.

Be kind to your Significant Other
