Rebuilding Our Habitat Pond… Again

Source: Rebuilding Our Habitat Pond… Again

You can make a small pond in a cattle waterer or other metal container, or suspend a big soda bottle over a concave dish and pierce a small hole in the bottom so that it very slowly drips. Provide some shelter for the animals around your watering hole, and you’ll be helping the wildlife get through these extremely dry days. They will respond by eating your bad bugs, building soil, pollinating and so much more.Read more.

Fantastic! And I haven’t posted it in a while, but for any new readers out there Diane Kennedy’s permaculture Garden (link) is a fantastic experience and a wonderful place to take a tour.

Xenografts

Wow I thought I had done several posts on xenografts but I could not find any. I usually babble about them while hikeing and such. But in a nutshell- living animal tissue, is inserted surgically into a human being or the other way around. But in most cases it is animal tissue into humans because in some cases it is used medically to treat certain diseases such as Parkinson’s.

With Parkinson’s it is fetal pig brain tissue that is injected. It really seems to help. But microbiologically that is just asking for an animal virus to “learn” — to mutate, to take over a human being. The key thing is that both of the cell types are alive and ticking along. Animals, including humans have something on the order of 100,000 hidden (cryptic) viruses in their genomes.
Since the cells are alive and expressing their DNA there is a low chance that a cryptic virus could mutate and become active. And thus be creating genetic variance. If one of these genetic variants could infect the human tissue or host it could be catastrophic.

If an AIDs type swine virus with the communicability to humans of the common cold became active the human race would be dead before we knew it. The problem is: like asteroid impacts; there is a very low probability of this happening and it is virtually impossible to tell a victim of Parkinson’s or their family members that we have a good treatment but we don’t want to use it because there is an incredibly tiny chance that we would kill the entire human race.

But biologically it is still not a good idea to be putting living animal tissue into humans or the reverse– human cells into animals.

So Unfair! How Our Brain Responds to Injustice

Just a very cool article on how our genes guide our behavior.
Something to think about the next time I’m annoyed at another driver. or I believe that I have not been given my 54% “even half” of the cake :-)
And as an aside something to think about when we spray neurotoxins around or medicate with psychoactive drugs. What are we doing to our brain chemistry?

psychiatric drugs and mass killings

Very interesting and in my opinion thoughtful article. And an issue not brought up is how we tend to do randomized studies and get data on percent effectiveness of a certain drug but then tend to believe that if the drug is 48% effective that we all get a 48% benefit from it, as though we were all exactly the same height. We never really expect to see someone have none of the beneficial effects but some or all of the side effects.

Breakthrough as scientists grow sheep embryos containing human cells

Advance brings us closer to growing transplant organs inside animals or being able to genetically tailor compatible organs, say researchers

Source: Breakthrough as scientists grow sheep embryos containing human cells

One of my absolute best friends believes that the human race will kill itself within the next 40 years. I have been telling him that I didn’t believe that. And I now I see this story. Anybody remember the swine flu “epidemic” when we were appalled that other countries were allowing pigs and ducks to live with the Human family under the same roof and our news media proclaimed that this would spread disease?

Those animals were just living together they didn’t have their cells (with hundreds of thousands of hidden viruses) growing in another organism.

Mixing two living cell types with their cryptic viruses together is called a xenograft and it is just begging to have the animal virus mutate so that it can then infect the human cells.

Where are our government Regulators. Oh wait, some people actually believe that there’s way too much government bureaucracy– and in what little regulation we still have the regulators are chosen and controlled by the very organizations that they’re supposed to be regulating. Maybe my friend is right.

But then as my roommate says we can still love and cherish and appreciate the world every day. So that’s my permaculture recommendation to you all: love cherish and appreciate the world everyday.

Study: This common household chore is as damaging as smoking 20 cigarettes a day

Love to keep a tidy home? The chemicals in the cleaning sprays could be detrimental to your respiratory system, according to a new report.

Friends
Most cleaning agents have a bleaching agent in them. Bleaching agents are oxidants.
Oxidants are the opposite of antioxidants.

If you take antioxidants for good health then exposing yourself to oxidants is probably the reverse of that. Just one way of thinking about it.

Neighbors

Someone asked me recently the following question regarding my concern about salt pools and the fact that they are just chlorinated systems.

What’s healthier swimming in a chlorine pool or the SF Bay? Is there a public swimming pool in LA or SF you recommend?

The answer is tougher than you might expect. One is high levels of mostly one very reactive chemical. The other is a hodge podge of bacteria and known and unknown componds that can have many types of interactions with our bodies.

I also personally know some people who swim in public/community pools and they hate the chemicals and the chemical smell on their hair and clothes afterwards. So it got me thinking about all the people I know who have swimming pools that are hardly ever used. And in my opinion they would love to have a new friend join them in getting more use out of their pool.

And here is an idea. Talk to, call your neighbors. Talk to people at work. Look at an aerial view of your neighborhood and look at the pools. Talk to people you know and find out if someone has a swimming pool that they would be interested in converting to a non-chemical system.

One person can supply the pool and the other could pay for the installation of my system. You could also get a group of three or more. You all benefit, and it is far less of an impact on any one of you. And guess what- you generate a community as well
Just an idea.

Watch "Flying Fish Picked Off From Above And Below – The Hunt – BBC Earth" on YouTube

I am rooting for the flying fish! But this is also a perfect example of why something may not be able to evolve further when faced with an animal that has existing domination of that micro ecology.

The winged birds are much more agile. They dominate the air and thus prevent better flight capabilities in the fish. If the fish started flying higher and further, the birds would have an easy meal. The evolutionary pressure on the fish seems to be to not fly further and higher. If the birds were wiped out the fish would most likely evolve to fly better and thus evolve far better muscular systems and wings. Maybe ending up bat like but aquatic. Cool :-)

So if pterosaurs dominated the skies and birds were evolving flight capability, it may have been a very similar scenario; that the birds “didn’t want to” fly better until there were no more pterosaurs.

Spindle cells! ☺
Elephants have them too.
Types of neuron cells in the brain that are associated with compassion, language, and empathy. What would a caring, empathetic, loving, organism 15 _million_ years older than us be like?

Oh wait maybe it would forgive us for butchering it almost out of existence.

Japan still butchers them.
Fill out a form at Invest in Japan and tell them what you think about that.
